Ruth was born in Alice Springs Hospital, the closest hospital to Yuendumu, the remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory where she grew up. She began painting at the Warlukurlangu art centre when she was a teenager and has done this at the same time as undertaking many administration jobs, working for 13 years in the Community Development Employment Project. She paints Dreaming stories which relate directly to her land and the plants and animals that inhabit it. These stories were taught to her by her grandfather, grandmother and her 'number two grandmother' Daisy Napanangka Nelson, who was also an artist at Warlukurlangu in Yuendumu.
